There will be a fundraising concert May 2 at the Mex Pub to raise money for the Dawn to Dawn Action on Homelessness Society.

The 1st Tuesday Fundraiser is a monthly concert series that features local musicians in support of their favourite charities. Jim Hunter will be performing, and admission is by donation.

Food donations for the Comox Valley Food Bank are also welcome and appreciated.

You may know Hunter as part of the band “Flying Debris,” a group that got its start 15 years ago by participating in the Weekend Warrior program through the local business Sound Advice.

Hunter has been writing songs about his experiences for almost 20 years, covering themes of love, loss, hope and humour. He moved to Canada in the 60s, influenced by the social and political changes of that era, and offers a mix of blues, folk, country and rock. Hunter will be joined by bandmates Steve Ellis on bass, Mathew Nicol on keyboard, and Steve Smith on harmonica.

Dawn to Dawn is a local non-profit that provides transitional housing in the Comox Valley.

These short-term housing arrangements are intended to get homeless individuals and families into a safe living environment, and directed to resources that will help them gain their independence and move into long-term housing. Without transitional housing, individuals are more at risk, and less likely to get the help that could help them find long-term solutions.

These community resources can come in many forms, including skills training, medical treatments, or mental health support, and provides the tools and opportunities for social and skills development.

A community recreation program offers opportunities to build relationships that can include sports, book clubs, and community gardens. The RV Program accepts donated RVs which are then cleaned and repaired, and given to those who are already living in a similar shelter. For more information, visit dawntodawn.org.

The musical evening is sponsored by the Mex Pub, and hosted by orgnanizers Judy and Bruce Wing. Door prizes will follow the performance.

Any local businesses that would like to contribute to 1st Tuesday door prizes for this or future events can call Judy at 250-897-0423.

The music begins at 7:30 p.m. with an opening set of instrumental music by the Snow Monkeez featuring Blaine Dunaway, Steve Ruskin and Bruce Wing.

A Facebook event is also available to share with neighbours and friends.
