New breed of folk songstress

Hailing from the wilds of Mayne Island, Marley Daemon is a new breed of folk songstress. Drawing on a strange array of cross-cultural artistic influences (jazz, Celtic, magic literature, Wicca, postmodern philosophy and Indian classical, to name a few), she weaves music that pushes into unexplored territory, uncovering new human emotions.

Jazz and classical-trained, Daemon brings both high artistry and a passionate sensibility to her soul-filled singing and her expert performances on piano and guitar. With strikingly honest lyrics exploring the questions surrounding human identity, and musical flavours ranging from fairytale folk, creative post-bop soul, sassy cabaret and epic orchestral art songs, Daemon serves up a musical feast for the heart.

Daemon is taking her show on the road this month for a West Coast tour that includes a date Thursday at Joe’s Garage in Courtenay.

She will be backed by Zoe Guigueno (Fish and Bird) on upright bass and vocals, and Jesse Edward Thom on vocals, percussion, glockenspiel and looping pedal.

“The sophistication of her writing really sets her apart — a very exciting young talent with a knockout first recording.” — Oliver Swain (Outlaw Social, Scruj Macduhk, The Red Stick Ramblers).

“Uniquely musical and adventurous.” — Brent Jarvis (Brent Jarvis Academy of Music).

“The musicality of her songs illustrates a fascinating sense of melodic construction, adventurous harmonies and forms, as well as stylistic nods to her many diverse influences, all while maintaining her own identity and delectable pop sensibility …” — Adrian Dolan, producer, musician (The Bills).
