The Comox Valley Art Gallery is hosting a reception and artists’ talk on Saturday, Jan. 27, starting at 1 p.m. to mark the opening of the convergent program What Happens When.

The event is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

What Happens When features work by Christine Kirouac (Winnipeg), Lukas Roy (Comox Valley), and Janet O’Dell (Comox Valley). It will run from Jan. 27 to March 23.

“The opening event is an opportunity for the community to meet the artists, learn about their art practice and creative process, and gain insights into their work on exhibition at the Gallery,” said CVAG co-curator Denise Lawson.

“The program features work by contemporary artists and community instigators that explore the unexpected.”

Winnipeg artist Christine Kirouac, who is presenting The Recipe Project, is in the Comox Valley to help install her exhibition. She will stay until Feb. 13, while she conducts creative research.

Comox Valley artist Lukas Roy is presenting Familiars, based on a graphic novel he created. The exhibition will include the world premiere of an animation based on his graphic novel, which will be displayed on the large video screen in the CVAG window gallery.

During the exhibition, Roy will lead ‘zine-making workshops. Watch the Gallery’s website for times and dates.

Wind Phone is an installation by Janet O’Dell, based on a provocation by Japanese artist Itaru Sasaki.

What Happens When engages community participants through art-making and conversations that foster exploration of how we understand, interpret, and navigate the intricate, creative, and evolving landscape of change,” said Lawson.

CVAG is an accessible facility, and is open Wednesdays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Groups can also book appointments outside of these hours by sending an e-mail to gallery@comoxvalleyartgallery.com.

CVAG exhibitions and events are free, with donations gratefully accepted.
