Workshop for piano teachers Friday

Catharine Kemp-Roth to lead a workshop on strategies for success in playing the piano while avoiding stress or injury to the hands and arms

The Comox Valley Piano Society is sponsoring Catharine Kemp-Roth in a workshop on strategies for success in playing the piano while avoiding stress or injury to the hands and arms.

Catharine refers to this as the bio-mechanics of piano playing.

Physical efficiency in playing the piano to avoid injury, to speed learning and to develop superior musicality is Kemp-Roth's goal for students. This training is important from the very first lesson and should be developed and refined over the course of a student's studies.

Catharine shares this knowledge from years of training and retraining of piano technique, as she suffered severe physical injury from playing the piano incorrectly.

Kemp-Roth gained her B.Mus. from the University of Calgary and piano teaching certificate the from the Victoria Conservatory studying under May-Ling Kwok. She has performed, accompanied and lectured professionally for many years.

She lives in Victoria, where she teaches piano to beginning through senior students.

Who is this workshop for? All piano teachers.

Catharine will take you through the biomechanics for beginning students, for scales, for junior, intermediate and senior repertoire. She will demonstrate, by means of large screen video, correct posture, arm and hand positions drawing from standard literature at the different levels. You will go away with ideas and exercises to use immediately with all of your students.

The workshop is for all piano players. If you have ever suffered strain of the hands or arms, you will gain an understanding of ways to rehabilitate your injury; ways to avoid further physical problems and continue to enjoy playing piano.

Finally, this workshop is for parents of children who are studying the piano. If you, like many parents, practice with your child daily, this workshop will give you the understanding of what to observe as "healthy/unhealthy hands." With this knowledge, you will be a better helper to your child in his/her practice time.

During the workshop day, Kemp-Roth has set aside time for individuals who are interested in a private consultation. These lessons should be booked by contacting Jill at 250-890-0342 or jill.myc.comox@gmail.com.

This full-day workshop will take place Feb. 28 at the Living Word Church on Mission Hill at 4778 Island Highway in the Comox Valley.
