The Comox Valley Art Gallery’s upcoming exhibition includes the world premiere of the first animated artwork created by internationally renowned artist Sonny Assu.
Assu’s work is part of CVAG’s convergent program Return to Water 2024, which runs from April 13 to May 25.
The opening event will take place Saturday, April 13, starting at 1 p.m. It will include an artist talk by Assu, cultural sharing, and a reception.
The event is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
Assu, an interdisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited worldwide, is a member of Wei Wai Kum (Ligwiłda’xw) Nation and lives in Campbell River.
The Return to Water 2024 program features five works created by Assu:
The Last of Us is Assu’s first-ever animated artwork. The continuously generating animation was created with collaborating animator Dan Beaule, and will screen throughout the program on CVAG’s LED wall facing the outdoor plaza.
Assertion of Sovereignty, Territorial Acknowledgements, Paradise Syndrome, and Sonny’s NDN Kitsch Collection will all be installed inside the Gallery’s exhibition space.
The Return to Water 2024 program also includes Shifting Currents, a series of community activations presented in conjunction with community partners. Watch for details on the CVAG website: www.comoxvalleyartgallery.com
