North Island-Powell River MP Rachel Blaney’s announcement last week that she is stepping back after the next federal election in 2025 has prompted other candidates to make their case to future voters.

Green Party Candidate Jessica Wegg released a press release thanking Blaney for her “unwavering dedication to this constituency.”

“Rachel Blaney has been a formidable advocate for the hard-working people of this area, grappling with the profound impacts of economic and social transformations of recent years,” Wegg said. “Her legacy of leadership, especially on issues affecting our local communities, stands as a testament to her tireless commitment.”

Wegg was recently named the Green Party’s International Trade Critic, based on her background in law.

“Jessica’s extensive background in law makes her an invaluable addition to our team as the Trade Critic,” said Elizabeth May, co-leader of the Green Party of Canada. “We’re honoured to have her take on this vital role.”

Wegg’s experience as a lawyer included pushing for individual and collective rights against systemic injustices. She has also worked in advocacy for Indigenous rights.

“In times of adversity, simplistic solutions and scapegoating offer no lasting change or compelling vision for the future. The politics of fear lead nowhere,” Wegg said. “As Greens, we pledge to foster inclusive politics, engage in challenging dialogues, and fiercely advocate for our constituents. It’s time to empower individuals, rekindle their agency, and collaboratively forge effective local and national solutions.”

Wegg will be hosting a home-based meet and greet event in Campbell River on April 27. For more information, contact Ofri Livneh at 250-870-3117. Future events will be announced in coming weeks.
