Roger Kishi is seeking re- election to Cumberland counci. Kishi was first elected to Cumberland Council in November 2011, and re-elected in November 2014.
“I look forward to continuing to serve the residents of Cumberland on Council,” said Kishi. “I believe that my experience, knowledge and commitment can serve the Village in to the future.”
While on council, Kishi has served as Cumberland’s representative on Comox Strathcona Solid Waste Management Board, Waste to Energy Select Committee, AVICC Special Committee on Solid Waste Management (alternate), Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital District, St. Joseph’s Hospital board, Comox Valley Regional District (alternate), Comox Valley Social Planning Society, Comox Valley Community Justice Society (alternate), Cumberland’s Homelessness & Affordable Housing Committee (alternate), and Cumberland Museum Ginger Goodwin 100-Year Anniversary Committee.
As director - Homeless & Housing Programs at the Wachiay Friendship Centre, Roger’s work is directly involved in housing issues, being involved in the 34-unit Braidwood Affordable Housing Project set for completion the end of 2018. His work includes being on the board of M’akola Housing Society, the largest Indigenous affordable housing provider in British Columbia, with more than 1,600 homes for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, serving more than 5,000 family members. Roger represents Wachiay at the Comox Valley Coalition to End Homelessness, Comox Valley Community Health Network, the Ad- Hoc Emergency Resource Organizations (AHERO), BC Non- Profit Housing Association and Canadian Housing & Renewal Association.
“I’m proud to have been a part of the many improvements within the village over the past seven years, infrastructure projects like the Dunsmuir Avenue & Cumberland/Bevan Road water, sewer and road project, water treatment upgrade project, Village Park improvements, including skate and jump park facilities, and playground and spray park improvements, Lake Park Master Plan, including new washroom/shower facility.”
Kishi has also brought forward issues/topics to council during his two terms. These include, an off-leash dog park, establishment of advisory committees, development of a public art policy, support of UNDRIP and consideration of a village ban on single use plastics.
“I’m ready and willing to work on the many complex issues facing the village,” Kishi states. “Issues like affordable housing, liquid waste management, building a new fire hall, managing growth and economic development for the benefit of the village, and increasing community engagement in Village decisions.”
