My name is Ron Freeman and I am excited to put my name forward to serve the town of Comox as a councillor. It is my firm belief that we need to invest in the next generation.
While Comox has been lampooned over its grey hair, blue licence plates and tranquil (sleepy?) nature, I believe that recent decisions taken by the Town’s leadership have moved us in the direction of being a vibrant community filled with young families and a community filled with possibilities.
The water park and revitalization of the mall, the allowance of secondary suites that make home ownership or rental affordable and the ‘open for business’ attitude are examples of this and it is my desire to see this direction continue so Comox remains a growing, sustainable community. It is essential that we have strategic development while preserving our natural resources and environment.
My wife Eunice and I have lived in the Comox Valley for 19 years, the last eight in Comox. We moved to the Comox Valley to give leadership to a small group of people seeking to establish a church and that small group has become a vibrant community known as Living Hope. Leadership has been a driving force throughout my life.
Since moving here it has led to chairing the ministerial, board chair of the Pregnancy Care Center, helping to organize the Habitat for Humanity affiliate and also serving as its board chair for many years.
My interests have included coaching baseball, playing and umpiring in the local masters baseball league, umpiring competitive youth baseball and curling.
After resigning the leadership of Living Hope, I filled in as interim executive director for Habitat for Humanity, pursued getting my security licence and am currently working with the commissionaires at 19 Wing Comox. My wife and I have been married for 39 years and have three children and eight grandchildren.
It has been my privilege through the various roles and responsibilities that I have had to develop the gifts and abilities needed to serve on town council.
Administration, budgeting, open and honest communication, team work and the ability to listen were vital components of being a pastor and board member and will be absolutely necessary to function well as a town councillor.
