Recently retired BC Lions football star J.R. LaRose will be speaking on June 2 in the K’ómoks First Nation Big House on men’s role in preventing violence against women.
Be More Than a Bystander is a groundbreaking initiative between the Ending Violence Association of BC (EVA BC) and the BC Lions aimed at substantially increasing awareness and understanding about the impact of men’s violence against women.
A member of the One Arrow First Nation, J.R. has travelled across the province bringing the message to high schools and community gatherings that boys and men can make a difference in speaking out about violence.
“We are so pleased the EVA BC and the BC Lions have chosen to come to the Comox Valley,” said Heather Ney, executive director of the Comox Valley Transition Society. “We have been supporting women and children experiencing violence since 1987 and have been so inspired by the Bystander initiative. This will be an exciting evening.”
The free event takes place June 2 at 7 p.m. at the K’ómoks First Nation Big House, 3330 Comox Rd. Doors open at 6:30. Andy Everson will be providing a welcome and the Kumugwe Dancers will perform. Door prizes and refreshments will be provided.
