Blue Dot Rally Friday

Florence Filberg Centre at 5 p.m.

Citizens from across the Comox Valley are invited to the Florence Filberg Centre at 5 p.m. this Friday (April 10) for a rally in support of the Blue Dot movement.

The rally is being held during the AVICC (VI & Coastal Local Gov’t Assoc.) annual general meeting being hosted in Courtenay April 10-12.

This Blue Dot event is part of a growing movement of Canadians calling upon their local communities to pass municipal declarations respecting people’s right to live in a healthy environment.

It is an initiative of the David Suzuki Foundation and calls for municipalities to officially declare their belief that every community has a right to a healthy environment including:

• breathing clean air

• drinking clean water

• consuming safe food

• accessing nature

• knowing about pollutants released into the local environment

• and participating in government decisions that will affect the environment.

One of the proposed resolutions at the AVICC meeting is the creation of a Provincial Environmental Bill of Rights, in support of the Blue Dot Movement.

Organized locally by Imagine Comox Valley, the goal of the Blue Dot Rally this Friday is to show support for the resolution that will come before the gathered municipalities the following day.

Cumberland and Comox have already signed on to the Blue Dot Movement.

The Blue Dot Rally will begin at 5 p.m. outside the doors of the Filberg. It will include special guest performers and speakers including award-winning slam poet and Victoria city councillor Jeremy Loveday, Victoria city councillor and historian Ben Isbett, Comox Valley poet laureate Kevin Jay Flesher, and rising local star Stella Swanson and her family band.
