The Town of Comox has received $919,000 in funding under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program: COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream to develop a new sidewalk and bike lanes on Comox Avenue.
The project is one of council’s strategic priorities and involves the south side of Comox Avenue, from Rodello Street to Ellis Street.
This new sidewalk will eliminate the need for pedestrians having to cross Comox Avenue to access a sidewalk in that area.
The project will also include dedicated bike lanes, extending the biking network for all ages.
“A strategic priority of Council is to continue to make Comox a more accessible pedestrian and bike-friendly community, encouraging more active forms of transportation and enabling residents and workers of all ages to get around in cleaner and more affordable ways,” said Mayor Russ Arnott. “We extend our thanks to the Government of Canada and the Province of B.C. for recognizing the importance of this project and providing their financial support to help make it a reality.”
The funding comes as a result of a successful grant application submitted by the town. The Government of Canada is providing $735,680 and the government of B.C. is providing $183,920. Work is anticipated to commence in the summer of 2022, with an estimated completion of mid-fall.
