Comox council approved and finalized a new five-year financial plan this week, with general taxes rising 2.26 per cent, or an average of $31 for a single-family home this year.

The numbers are in.

During a short special council meeting prior to Wednesday's committee of the whole meeting, Comox council approved and finalized a new five-year financial plan, with general taxes rising 2.26 per cent, or an average of $31 for a single-family home this year.

Despite the increase, the increase of $200 for the Northern and Rural Home Owner Grant, net taxes on an average home will actually fall $137.

Commercial taxes will increase 1.26 per cent overall.

Over the five years, the plan outlines expenditures of $99 million to provide town services including $19 million on capital projects for improving infrastructure, and $7.5 million will be spent in 2011.

Major capital projects for 2011 include completion of the addition at the Comox Community Centre, installation of cycles lanes on Comox Avenue, overlaying pavement on a portion of Guthrie Road, building upgrades at d'Esterre Seniors Centre and acquisition of parkland on Orchard Park Drive.

According to a press release, other revenues that will help pay for these 2011 projects area a federal Recreation Infrastructure Canada grant of $950,000 for the community centre upgrade, a potential provincial grant of $375,000, federal gas tax revenues of $1.3 million and regional district funds of $450,000.
