British Columbians will enjoy a Family Day holiday as of next February. The question is which day it will fall on. Premier Christy Clark has proposed the holiday for the second or third Monday of the month.Last week, the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce and other B.C. Chambers had a teleconference with Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Pat Bell, who will announce holiday details after government has considered input from the public, worker groups, employers, the tourism industry and the business sector. The purpose of the conference call was to identify factors industry and business consider important in determining the date. The U.S. and most Canadian jurisdictions have a holiday on the third Monday."Basically the consensus was that the tourism industry seemed to mutually want the day to fall on the second Monday so they can take advantage of the two holiday weekends with President's Day falling on the third Monday of February," said Terri Perrin, marketing and communications manager at the Comox Valley Chamber.Other industries, however, prefer the third Monday in order to align with Alberta and the U.S. "The reasons cited for that were family and flexibility for both sides to take advantage of a long weekend," Perrin said. There was also feedback from the financial side related to stock markets: If markets close on the second Monday in Canada and the third Monday south of the border, then two weekends in one month are affected.Another factor was geographical location within the province. "The decision will be made (by Bell and his team) within the coming weeks," Perrin said. "There's a strong feeling that it would be the third Monday." reporter@comoxvalleyrecord.com
