Fields, a major Western Canada retailer that sells discount items, is closing its operation in the fall. Its store at the Comox Centre Mall is among 141 locations in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. The company shut down 26 of its stores in Ontario last month. The Hudson Bay Company, which owns the chain, has said it plans to focus on growing The Bay, Lord & Taylor, and Home Outfitters. The history of Fields dates back to 1950 when Joseph Segal opened the first store in Vancouver. Segal's initial focus on discount family clothing expanded over the next two decades as he acquired other retailers, including several Bay stores in the B.C. Interior. By 1971, Fields expanded into Alberta. In 1976, Fields bought 50 per cent of the Zellers chain. Two years later Hudson Bay bought Zellers, a purchase that included Fields. Hudson Bay has signed a tentative deal to sell 37 of its locations. The new owner would keep the Fields name intact, meaning some towns, including Parksville, Port Hardy and Port McNeill, could retain their Fields stores. The Comox location is not listed among stores expected to remain open.
