The Comox Valley Community Foundation awarded more than $63,000 to 14 charities at its annual Community Giving Awards ceremony Thursday at the Comox Community Centre.
Money helps fund projects ranging from affordable housing initiatives to the purchase of a new refrigerator for a support group.
“We hear firsthand from the groups about how these funds will be used and how they will impact each organization’s clients and the community as a whole," CVCF president Andrea Rowe said. "It’s inspiring to hear from so many groups that are working hard to make a difference.”
As in previous years, the foundation had a difficult time selecting recipients. They are as follows:
• Anderton Therapeutic Gardens Society, $3,790;
• Beaufort Association for the Mentally Handicapped, $8,000;
• Child Development Society, $10,000;
• Ground Search & Rescue, $2,520;
• Head Injury Society, $3,500;
• Land Trust, $3,500;
• Project Watershed Society, $4,050;
• Therapeutic Riding Society, $4,370;
• Transition Society, $1,064;
• Cumberland & District Historical Society, $10,376;
• Cumberland Community Forest Society, $5,000;
• Boy Scouts Camp Gilwell, $2,456.61;
• City of Courtenay Supportive Housing Project, $2,456.61;
• Comox Valley Lifelong Learning Association, $2,456.61.
Later in the year, $24,200 in scholarships and bursaries will be paid to students.
This year, the foundation is awarding nearly $132,000 to charities and students, the largest amount disbursed since the foundation was founded.
Since 1996, the CVCF has put more than $1.3 million into the community.
