Mark R. Isfeld Secondary is getting a bit of a name change.

The board of education agreed to a recommendation at the September meeting to change it to Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School–École Secondaire.

“The intent of the motion is to actually reflect the school,” superintendent Tom Demeo told the trustees.

A letter to the board from principal Brian McAskill said the school made the request after consultation with teaching staff. The change is to reflect the immersion program for grades 8 to 12, the school’s connection to the French-speaking population in the area and to Isfeld’s family of schools including École Robb Road Elementary School and École Puntledge Park Elementary. The school has also provided a new logo to incorporate the addition to the name.

“It’ll still be Mark Isfeld, but it will recognize that it is the French immersion school in our district for secondary students,” Demeo said.

As the district’s secondary school for French immersion, the school has more than 50 per cent of the student population in the immersion stream, he added.

Demeo noted the district had also changed the name for Lake Trail last year to add “Community” to the name to reflect its community school mandate.
