No changes to HST referendum timetable

No changes to the HST referendum timetable are being contemplated despite the postal lockout.

HST referendum voting packages were to be mailed to registered voters in 38 electoral districts this week, including the Comox Valley.

Trouble is, postal employees were locked out Tuesday night.

Canada Post workers were walking with picket signs in Courtenay and Comox Tuesday morning. They were to have a Monday-Wednesday-Friday work week.

No changes to the referendum timetable are being contemplated.

Voters who do not receive a voting package by June 24 can call Elections BC at 1-800-661-8683 to register, or to update voter records. Deadline to request a voting package is midnight, July 8.

Eligible voters must be:

  • a Canadian citizen;
  • 18 years of age or older, on or before July 22;
  • a B.C. resident for at least six months immediately before July 22;
  • registered as a B.C. voter;
  • not disqualified by the Election Act or other law.

Ballot packages must be received by Elections BC, a Service BC centre, or an Elections BC collection centre before 4:30 p.m. July 22.  Locations to deliver ballot packages are listed on the Elections BC website at http://www.elections.bc.ca/index.php/referenda-recall-initiative/hst-2011/#return. The yellow return envelope is postage paid.
