It’s one of the most popular walkways in Comox, and the Rotary Promenade atop the Comox Harbour breakwater is starting to show its age.
At Wednesday’s Comox council committee of the whole meeting, Al Fraser, superintendent of parks/property management told council he has begun an extension feasibility exercise which will include a conceptual design of walkway platforms and extensions and cost estimates for both extension and full replacement of guardrails and decking.
“We’re looking at two additional drop-down decks off the main spine of the walkway,” he noted.
Coun. Ken Grant inquired about the possibility of commercial abilities on the walkway, and Fraser said a power upgrade is something to consider.
He added it would give the Town the ability to offer some commercial activities at festivals and offer ‘pop-up’ applications.
In his report to council, Fraser noted it is necessary to take a good look at the structure both in terms of creating a sound renewals plan and conceptual design plan that better depicts how the structure may look and function in future years.
He added he anticipates receiving the information from the feasibility exercise in late October with a view to present it shortly after it has been delivered to the Town.
“It’s going to be a collective decision with the community.”
