A Canadian Spitfire pilot who survived the crushing Second World War defeat at Dieppe in 1942 died Saturday in Comox.
Wing Commander (Ret.) Douglas (Duke) Warren went on to become one of only 22 RCAF pilots seconded to the United States Air Force (USAF) as F-86 Sabre pilots during the Korean War.
In 2007, he received France's most prestigious military honour, being inducted into the Legion of Honour, at the order of then-president Jacques Chirac.
Warren and his twin brother Bruce were born in 1922 in Nanton, Alta., each fulfilling a dream of being a fighter pilot.
Bruce was killed in 1951 when a CF-100 jet fighter he was testing crashed.
