Sierra Club Comox Valley has paid off its debt in full to the Comox Valley Regional District, Sierra chair Mike Bell announced Saturday.
In 2009, Sierra Canada filed a lawsuit against Gas N Go Petroleum North Ltd and the Comox Valley Regional District for allowing the development of the Gas N Go station on the Dyke Road.
The adverse cost award of almost $40,000 owing to the regional District and the company was the responsibility of Sierra Club Comox Valley. The local Sierra Club group is also on track to pay off the company within the next few months.
“We are deeply indebted to all our members and friends, to the Comox Valley Unitarian Fellowship and the Comox United Church who have made direct contributions and/or volunteered their time, energy and resources in a broad range of fundraising activities,” said Bell. “We see the resolution of the debt as a strong indication of support for our volunteer organization and our environmental work in this valley.”
Bell noted that Sierra Club Comox Valley, now out from under the debt, can focus all its energies on two major environmental concerns — the proposed Raven and Bear coal mines and the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline.
