Al McGivern passed away January 09, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife Uthai (Ben) McGivern; sons: Dan McGivern, Vancouver, Michael McGivern, Courtenay; daughter Cori McGivern, Vancouver (grandchildren: Lindsey and Meghan); daughter Tracy McGivern, Comox (grandchildren: Virgil, Amber, and Allisyn); and many nieces and nephews. Brother Norm McGivern, Princeton; sisters: Lovina Tyler (Dennis), Terrace, Kay Popke, Chilliwack; brother Denny McGivern, Memphis, Tennessee.

Al was born in Surrey, BC. He worked for C.N. Telecommunications throughout BC, Yukon, NWT and Alberta. Al and his first wife Willi and family moved to Comox where they became owners of the Falcon Mobile Home Park. From that time forward Al became a life-time entrepreneur. Baseball was one of Al’s passions. He started and coached the Amanitas Baseball team in the 70’s. And also played ball for many years, starting in Cloverdale as a young boy.

Al and his second wife Ben traveled extensively in Asia. His interest in local mushrooms grew to a full fledged business with his partners Courtney Powell and Rick Woodrow forming Alpac Wilderness Products Ltd. They are known throughout Western Canada and Western USA for purchasing various mushrooms for export.

The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude to Dr. Blacklock, the nurses and all the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their unfailing effort.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at The Elks Hall at 231-6th St., Courtenay on Saturday, January 19, 2002 at 2:00 PM. Lunch will be served.

The family would appreciate that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Cancer Society, 102-1509 Cliffe Avenue, Courtenay, B.C. V9N 2K6.
