August 28, 1920 – July 6, 2016

It is with much love and sadness that the family announces the passing of our dear Mom, Barbara. She passed away peacefully at home, with family by her side.

Predeceased by her husband Fred in 1989, Mother Mildred Smith, brother Gordon and sisters Edith, Hilda, Jean and Peggy.

She leaves behind her children, Stephen (Norma), Gary (Deborah), Nancy (Pat) & Cathy (Scott), her grandchildren Dean (Wendy), Karen, David, Adrian, Shawn (Jackie), Kelly, David & Evan. Her great-grandchildren Kaitlyn (Nigel), Erin, Stephen, Kassie, Hannah, Ainsley, Elle, Lyla & Lucy and her great-great grandson Artemis and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Mom grew up in Ottawa during the depression, part of a loving close family, they never had much but were very happy. The family would spend their summers at the cottage in Woodridge, Ontario and Mom would always recall fondly the happy times of her youth and Woodridge, its people, her memories always close to her heart.

Mom met Dad during WWII and they made their life in Montreal where they lived until 1969 when Dad retired. The next phase of their married life took them to Victoria BC where Mom took a job outside the home at The Bay. Mom loved to spend time in the garden with Dad and would preserve the food they grew there. When Dad passed in 1989, Mom moved to Courtenay where she lived with Cathy & Scott.

Her family was her whole life and her gentle loving nature kept them close no matter where they were. We all loved Mom to bits and will miss her so very much.

The family is so grateful to Rachel (Nurse Next Door), the staff at TCU, the Care Aids of VIHA and the entire nursing staff at North Island Nursing and to Dr. Crowe and Dr. Bryant.

Funeral Service will be held Comox Valley Funeral Home, 1011 Ryan Road on July 22nd at 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetic Assocation.
