Bryan Greenwood passed away at home in Courtenay, BC after a short battle with cancer.
His first years were spent with his parents in Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Vancouver while his father Fred trained as a R.C.A.F. pilot. His father was unfortunately killed in WWII, but in 1950 his mother Jessie Laffan remarried and moved with Bryan and younger brother Barry to Alberni, where his sisters Barbara Rhodenizer and Kathleen were born.
Growing up in Alberni, Bryan became a voracious reader, and checked out so many books from the library that the town librarian presented him with a Reading Award. He also joined the Boy Scouts, rising to the level of Queen Scout, enabling him to attend the 1957 World Scout Jamboree in England, along with 30,000 scouts from around the world.
After high school Bryan worked for many years at the Port Alberni pulp mill. As he was very social, he joined the Canadian Legion and walking and hiking groups in order to meet people.
It was at a Legion dance that he met his future wife, Linda. Bryan loved to engage people in conversation, no matter where he was, whether travelling or simply walking around town. This brought him many friends over the years.
After he retired, Bryan and Linda settled in Courtenay, where he volunteered both as a driver with the cancer van, Citizens on Patrol, camera club, book club, horticulture society, and he and Linda enjoyed many trips together.
Bryan is survived by his wife Linda, daughter Lynette (Andrew) and his siblings Barry (Christine), Barbara and Katie (Phil), as well as nieces, nephew and cousins.
At his request there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to our local SPCA.
