Cornel Piper passed away on September 2, 2018 at Hospice at the Views in Comox, B.C.

He was predeceased by his brothers Peter Piper and John Hrychuk, as well as his parents, Karp and Annie Hrychuck. Cornel is survived by his loving wife Rita Piper; daughters, Tannis (Sheldon) Gayer and Tracey (Brian) Bochinski; grandchildren, Cierria, Marley, Taylor, his brother Dave (Gail) Piper; sisters, Nida Kerychuk, Mary Krawchuk (Paul), Elsie Myhal (Alex), Millia Tkachuk (Walter), and Anne Diachhun, as well as numerous relatives and friends.

Cornel played 11 seasons in CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1957-67). He won 4 grey cups as a proud member of the O-Line.

-1996 Inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame for the 1955 Rods Football Team.

-1957 Elected to office of Provost of the Hunt (Buffalo).

-1962 City of Winnipeg Awarded Cornel with honorary citizen.

-1997 St. Nichol's Men's Club awarded Ukraine Athlete of the Year.

-1997 Winnipeg Blue Bombers inducted Cornel into Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.

-1986 Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame presented award for outstanding performance.

Cornel had a great sense of humour. Always had a smile on his face and loved everyone. He was a fantastic but modest athlete who excelled in all sports.

A gathering of family and friends in Celebration of Cornel's extraordinary life and achievements will be held on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 1:00 pm from Comox Valley Funeral Home, Cremation and Reception Centre, 1101 Ryan Road, Courtenay, with a reception following.
