Bell, Dorothy Mirren

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mom on September 5, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox.

She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1988, sister Ruth 1986, brothers Jim 1945 and Doug 1961.

Survived by son Doug (Roxana) Denman Island, Ann (Paul) Hofmann, Nanaimo and Bill (Joy) Merville; 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan and moved to Victoria at age 6 when her father enlisted in the Army. Moving to Merville after the war where the family lost everything in the1922 Merville Fire.

Growing up in Courtenay and graduating from Commerce School and worked 8 years for Tarbells. As a young woman she was a keen hiker and skier, and while atop the Comox Glacier in 1937 met with the National Geographic Survey of Canada. She and another member had 2 unnamed lakes named after them, hence the names Mirren & Milla Lakes at the base of the Comox Glacier.

Past president of the Canadian Daughters. She will be remembered for her beautiful crosstitch and needlework.

Travel with dad on his retirement was a priority and they enjoyed many trips overseas and in western Canada, with a highlight of an African Safari.

She built her second home on 1st Street in 1980 and enjoyed many local trips while growing her beautiful begonias and her view of the river.

Special thanks to Thelma Stevenson, Cath Bell for her support, Casa Loma and the entire staff of the 3rd Floor St. Joseph’s, Dr. Blacklock and Reggler.

As close family is presently traveling in Europe a Memorial Tea will be announced for October.
