Edith Mary
September 20, 1914 - August 2, 2009
After a long and fulfilling life, Edith passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Comox on August 2nd, 2009. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 70 years, Rowland; daughter, Roberta; son, Sid (Annie); grandchildren: Lisa (Bruce), Kerry (Daryl), Madelaine (Ian), David and Rebecca and six great-grandchildren. Edith is also survived by sisters: Roberta and Jay and was predeceased by her brother, Bob. Edith was born in Edmonton, Alberta on September 20, 1914, to Scottish pioneers Joseph and Jessie Ralston. After a brief stay in Edmonton, the family moved to Vancouver. Edith completed her schooling there and then worked at Vancouver General Hospital. After her marriage to Rowland in 1939, the couple resided in Victoria, where they lived for the next 68 years. While living in Victoria, Edith enjoyed boating and swimming and was a member of both the Capital City Yacht Club and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. She took Tai Chi lessons and practiced the art until last year. The fine arts were always of special interest to Edith and she became a docent at the Greater Victoria Art Gallery. As well, Edith took painting lessons. Chinese brush painting soon became her favorite medium for expression. For the past two years, Edith and Rowland lived in Comox near their family. Edith was laid to rest at Royal Oak Cemetery, Victoria with family in attendance.
