Emily Kathleen Riley

March 15, 2002

Riley, Emily Kathleen

born in Victoria, B.C., 1913, passed peacefully from her home in Comox, to her Heavenly Home on March 15, 2002. Kathleen was a graduate of Victoria High School, St. Joseph’s Hosp-pital School of Nursing (Victoria) and the University of British Columbia School of Public Health Nursing.

During World War II she served her country in Canada, England, North Africa and Italy as a Nursing Sister. The hospital ship she was on going to North Africa was refused docking privileges at Gibraltar because the ship preceding them, though equally distinguishable as a hospital ship, had been torpedoed. The enemy submarines were very active in that area.

Following her Army discharge she worked for the Victorian Order of Nurses in Montreal, for a short time. Then at the (then new) Veterans’ Hospital adjacent to Royal Jubilee Hospital. After obtaining her degree in Public Health Nursing at U.B.C. she worked diligently in the Public Health field in the District of Saanich until her retirement in 1966. She was greatly respected and loved by all who knew her.

Among those who grieve deeply at her passing is her good friend of 52 years and with whom she lived for 49 of those years, Iona (Noni), Jenner, her sister Mrs. Helen McVie of Victoria, her nephews Philip (Jill) McVie of Kamloops, B.C. and John (Elaine) McVie of Victoria, great nieces and nephew, and one great-great nephew (Grand Forks), cousins and many friends and associates. She is also very much missed by her little Bichon dog, Becky.

Special thanks for their support and help go to Dr. D. Blacklock, Dr. Kimberly, Rev. Margaret Elliott, Comox Valley Home Support, “People at Home” Assoc. the Hospice Society and many friends and neighbours who have supported us with their prayers and many kindnesses.
