In Loving Memory ~
George died suddenly Tuesday, February 28th at home doing his thing - fixing stuff.
Born and raised in Vancouver, he was predeceased by his older brother John and is survived by his sister Helen (Colgan).
As a youth, he was active in cycling and then motorcycling and was an enthusiastic sea cadet. Interests and loves that stayed with him throughout his life.
As a young man, he raced motorcycles at Westwood track and worked as a merchant marine before training at Vancouver Vocational Institute as a machinist. Late in his twenties, he was involved in a car accident which kept him off work for a couple of years. While in the hospital he met his wife and life partner, Penny (nee Graves)
The young couple moved to the Comox Valley in 1974 where George began a motorcycle business on the Dyke Road. When the business folded in 1977 he returned to marine engineering. Time in and schooling at Pacific Marine Training Institute earned him a First Class Engineering ticket. George worked for the Coast Guard, White Pass and BC Ferries before retiring in 2008.
Whenever home and in retirement, he enjoyed time with the family and working on motor vehicles with a preference for anything British that leaked oil. The Rover Car Club linked him to many others with that particular quirk.
His fondest travel memories were trips taken to the Isle of Man for the TT with his friend George Eaton. Sadly he will not make it back this year.
George will be deeply missed by his wife, daughters Robyn Hacking and Emily Hacking, son-in-law Jean Joseph Boudreault and grandson Oliver.
He will also be missed by many family members, lifelong friends from motorcycling days, the marine industry and neighbours and friends in the valley and beyond.
He will be remembered for his intelligence, mechanical engineering skills, generosity in helping others and cheerful endurance of chronic health issues.
George did not want a formal service. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 20th, from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Native Sons Hall.
