1941-2021 ~ Kurt Videbaek Nielsen passed away peacefully at home on October 7, 2021. Born in Denmark, 1941, Kurt immigrated to Canada as a child, settling in Port Alberni with his parents Douglas and Maja and his sister Ann.
Always curious and enthusiastic about learning, he received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of British Columbia in 1968.
This accomplishment always paled in Kurt's mind compared to the other major event in his life that year, marrying his wife Sheila.
Kurt and Sheila settled in Royston and their home was soon filled with the close friends and family who would surround Kurt his whole life. Their three sons, Michael, Erik and Adam, grew up with Kurt leading their Scout troops, taking them on hikes and teaching them tennis all while running a busy family practice in Cumberland and working at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Kurt's later years were filled with travel around the world, competing in the BC Senior Games, hiking and kayaking with his sons and grandson, participating for many years in the Cumberland Rotary and playing competitive games of tennis and squash.
He always had an audience for the limericks he relished telling and the toasts that were the highlight of many a family meal, with his three sisters and their families and his sons and their families, including eight grandchildren and many dogs, gathering together at every opportunity, including family reunions on Hornby Island.
Kurt is remembered with love by his wife of 53 years, Sheila; his sons Michael (Melanie), Erik (Leslie) and Adam (Melissa); his grandchildren Brad, Anna, Kate, Keely, Julia, Avery, Isla and Elaina; his sisters Ann, Jane and Carol; his nieces, nephews, cousins; and many close friends.
A private family remembrance will be held later this year.
