Coal mine atmosphere difficult to understand in paradise

Dear editor, I have lived in Comox since September 2010, and feel I have come to paradise.

Dear editor,

I have lived in Comox since September 2010, and feel I have come to paradise.

It’s a beautiful place with every convenience. Everyone is so friendly and there is an easy-going atmosphere. I love it.

I moved to Canada from England in 1970, and spent my childhood and older life there until I was 34. In that time the mines were gradually closed down in the U.K. due to the health hazards associated with the atmosphere.

A person had to wash the house windows inside and out (due to the black coal dust). Miners and others were dying with chronic respiratory problems and tuberculosis was rampant.

So, if you haven’t lived in this atmosphere, it is very difficult to understand it. All the skill and technology cannot erase this.

A. Darbyshire,

Comox
