LETTER - Former garbage man supports new Comox Valley collection system

Dear editor,

I fully support the new waste management program with the new bins we’ve received.

I believe there is a need to reduce the amount of garbage we are piling into landfills that make a blight on our landscape. When I received the new three bins, I felt the small organic bin we homeowners received at the Valley Vista Mobile Home Park were too small considering the size of our yards and the amount of gardening most us do.

I contacted the new manager of solid waste for Courtenay and through his co-operation as well as that of Emterra, I was able to have almost 60 organic bins swapped out for the large ones in a matter of two weeks.

As for the issue with the ‘garbage police,’ that does not bother me as long as it is a learning process and it is done professionally. I still, after all these years, struggle to figure out exactly what I can toss into the recycle bin, so if this helps me out to decide, no problem. In regards to a comment made about swampers on the current garbage trucks losing their jobs; I find you never see the same guys on the back of the trucks for much more than a few weeks and they are gone then new fellas appear. I know Emterra has had issues in keeping workers employed because, based on my own experience of being on the back of a garbage truck many years ago, it is hard work and not pleasant. Many of us don’t like change and that’s obvious, but I’m looking forward to the new system and the day I can place my new bin at the curb. I will do my best to make it work for me and my community, as I know many of my neighbours will do so as well.

Ted Usher,

Courtenay
