New info centre anything but 'waste of money'

I am saddened by the Under The Glacier cartoon that appeared in your April 8 issue.

Dear editor,

I am saddened by the Under The Glacier cartoon that appeared in your April 8 issue.

The cartoonist labels the new Information Centre near Cumberland as “a waste of money.” In my recent experience with such centres in the Maritimes they are anything but a waste of money.

My wife and I used them regularly to pick up maps and brochures and information on local sites. The friendly staff members not only advised us but phoned ahead to book us rooms at the best possible prices.

These centres were strategically located, for example just across the causeway leading to Cape Breton Island, at both ends of the bridge to Prince Edward Island, and in abandoned railway stations in the centres of the smaller towns.

The new one under construction near the Inland Highway will be a convenient gateway not just for the Comox Valley but also the entire northern end of Vancouver Island.

I would ask all readers to consider the attractions that should be highlighted at the centre and maybe some would be willing to volunteer time when it is open and operational.

Delbert Doll,
