Dear editor,
It is disheartening to hear that construction has begun on the much-disputed Gas and Go development on Dyke Road.
The timing of the groundbreaking for this project, just before Christmas, a spiritual time for many of us, is no surprise, as proceeding with this venture in spite of widespread opposition in the Valley, including the K’ómoks First Nation, is anything but spiritual.
First Nations and their ancestors have been guardians of the estuary for millennia and have always considered the effects of their actions on all life forms in the environment and would not consider doing anything to put them at risk in the short or long term, because they know that everything is connected and that ultimately we would be hanging ourselves.
We can all learn from that. It is a shame that if completed, the Gas and Go will only stand as a monument to greed and ego.
We should send the developer our love in the hope that he will change his mind … and our pity if he doesn’t. Bruce Avis,
Comox
