'Things aren't right — people have to speak up'

Dear editor, We want to thank Norm Reynolds for his informative letter You Won't Recognize The Place (Record, June 22).

Dear editor,

We want to thank Norm Reynolds for his informative letter You Won't Recognize The Place (Record, June 22) with regards to the implications of Bill C-38, which has just passed in our Canadian Parliament.

After researching the bill, we join with him and other concerned Canadians in concluding there is no doubt that the sweeping and disturbing changes encompassed in this bill takes the Canada we know and love on a path which is, we agree, "a massive misdirection of Canadian values."

Many in our generation have now received the gift of Grandparenthood. It is a time in our lives where we reflect on what was, what is now and what will be.

We are rapidly becoming the first generation to be leaving the next generation with less than we inherited across many facets of our society. This is a shameful legacy.

We can do better. How?

A Grade 4 student from Vancouver who has won a cross-Canada poetry contest was interviewed about her poem and how she sees the world.

Her response: "Things aren't right. People have to speak up."

Our commitment to our grandchildren and the next generation as we celebrate Canada's 145th birthday is to remain politically vigilant, become informed and to speak up. We hope others will do the same.
