The 27th edition of the longest running summer basketball camp in the Valley is coming up. Organizers encourage basketball enthusiasts to sign up before it fills up.

This year’s camp runs July 2-5 with two sites available to local youth. All boys and girls Grades 4 to 7 are welcome to join the fun at Lake Trail Middle School from 9 a.m. to noon the first week of July. Boys and girls going into Grades 8 to 12 would attend basketball camp at GP Vanier from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A high level of coaching expertise is available to not only teach new skills and help understand how to play the game, but also to enable participants to have lots of fun in skill competitions and in games.

Don Herman joins us again from Maple Ridge. Herman is a high school girls provincial championship coach, and has coached provincial teams. Joining him will be former Vanier stars Levi Timmermans, who is playing for the University of Saskatchewan, his playing partner and Island all-star Kyle Piercy, and Calvin Westbrook — the leading scorer in B.C. boys high school history who had a stellar university career in California and at Trinity Western. Coach Blake Tobacca of Mark Isfeld, another former Towhee and college star, runs the younger camp at Lake Trail. Vanier’s senior boys coach Larry Street runs the show at Vanier. There is over 120 years of coaching experience available to all who register.

Registration forms are available at all schools, or email Street at larrystreetcar@gmail.com. He will send a form. Call (250) 703-3646. If possible, try to sign up by June 20.
