The Simon Fraser University Clan track and field team announced last week the addition of two recruits for the upcoming 2011-12 season. Throws coach Jennifer Padrinao is excited about the commitments of Ryley Carr (Comox) and Selina Byer (North Vancouver) to the women’s program.
"We are very pleased to have Selina Byer and Ryley Carr join our throwing Clan family,” said Padrinao on the signing of the pair. “They will be great additions to our throws group and overall team.
"These two up and coming throwers have done well in their event areas: Selina came second at provincials in the javelin and Ryley was second at nationals in the hammer throw for her age group. Besides the obvious fact that they are talented in their event areas, their character is what stood out for us and a big reason why we recruited them."
A Highland Secondary student-athlete and member of the Comox Valley Cougars, Carr joins SFU as a very strong competitor in the hammer throw. She has a personal best of 44.23 metres and was the runner-up in the 2010 Canadian Youth Track and Field Championships. Carr will be graduating from Highland l this spring and looks forward to studying Kinesiology at SFU.
“I am very excited to be joining the Clan this fall, and looking forward to developing my technique and training to throw farther,” said Carr.
Byer joins the Clan as a javelin specialist with a personal best of 40.84 metres, and in 2009 was runner-up at the Legion National Championships. The soon-to-be Argyle grad is also well rounded athlete who has experience in a multitude of throws events such as the discus and shotput.
“I am so ecstatic to be joining to SFU Clan,” said Byer. “I can’t wait to start training with all the coaches up there and to be part of such a fantastic track team.”
