The second of three Zone 6 Social Distancing women’s golf tournaments was held virtually recently.

The format for this event was Mystery Partner. Each participating club forwarded names of their four lowest net players determined on their club’s ladies’ day the week of Aug. 10. These players were then matched with a player from another club and the team low net winners determined. More than 400 players participated at their clubs. A total of 19 clubs took part, and 76 players qualified in the virtual tournament.

The winners were Shelley Arnoldi of Storey Creek and partner Karen Vanetta of Comox. Runners up were Isabell Hayes of Fairwinds and partner Karen Williamson of Myrtle Point.

For the first tournament, held in July, clubs selected their best two-person gross and best two-person net teams using four ball format. These scores were compared to all other participating clubs – 18 in all – and winners were determined, with adjustment for slope, rating and par at the various clubs. In all, 172 teams took part with 20 teams qualifying for the Social Distancing Four Ball tournament. The overall net winners were Sandra Galloway and BarryAnne Bury from Sunnydale, with Crystal Friesen and Holly Sanders, also from Sunnydale, taking the gross prize.

The next tournament is the Social Distancing Gross and Net Champs, with participants playing over two days at their own club to determine the two best gross and two best net scores of their ladies. These winners will then virtually join players from other clubs in Zone 6 to determine the overall best gross and best net in the zone.

Zone 6 encompasses the Mid to North Vancouver Island from Duncan to Port Hardy, which includes Port Alberni and Powell River. It is composed of 22 diverse and challenging golf courses.
