Comox Valley athletes helped Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) teams to occupy several spots close to the top of this week's rankings across the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), including #1 in both men’s basketball and men’s volleyball.
The VIU Mariners men held onto the top position in men’s basketball after a 79-71 win over the Camosun Chargers moved them to 8-0 in league play. Highland grad Morgan Proctor plays guard for the M's while Mark Isfeld grad Cole Hutchings is a guard with the Chargers.
Other ranked PACWEST teams included the Quest Kermodes up to #5, and the Langara Falcons holding at #9.
The Douglas College Royals occupy top spot in men’s volleyball, taking over from the Red Deer Kings who dropped to #3. The Royals, with Highland grad Angus Ireland at setter, won both their matches versus the UFV Cascades last weekend.
The idle VIU Mariners, featuring Vanier grad Rylan Brouwer at middle/left side, maintained their #4 ranking, while the Camosun Chargers, also idle last weekend, dropped one spot from #11 to #12. Highland grad Rian Plante plays right side for the Chargers.
In women’s volleyball, the PACWEST owns two of the top four spots, and has three teams in the top 10. The Capilano Blues, with Mark Isfeld grad Hilary McLoughlin at left side, are the top-ranked PACWEST team at #3, while the Camosun Chargers, with Isfeld grad Hilary Graham at outside, are at #4. The UFV Cascades are #9, and the VIU Mariners, with Highland grad Mychaela Roelants at libero, are #14.
Finally, in women’s basketball, the Quest Kermodes are the top ranked PACWEST team at #5, followed by the VIU Mariners at #9. The Douglas Royals are ranked #14. There were no changes in the women’s basketball rankings.
