The Comox Valley United Division 1 men’s soccer team hosts Nanaimo United FC in its season-opener at home, Saturday night at the Vanier turf field.

The local squad narrowly avoided relegation to the second division last year. With just four wins last season, CVU finished ninth in the 10-team division, which normally means relegation to the second division. However, Division 2 winner Lakehill was part of a club that has a team in Div. 1, so the usual rules for relegation/promotion did not apply. Lakehill declined to enter a second team into the top tier.

Cowichan finished atop the Div. 1 standings last season with a 15-2-1 win-loss-tie record. Vic West was second at 10-4-4 and Nanaimo third at 9-5-4.

Kickoff Saturday is 6 p.m.

The following Saturday, Sept. 22, CV United hosts the Mid Isle Mariners at the Vanier turf. Kickoff is again 6 p.m.
