The longboards return to the Comox Valley this Saturday, June 2 for the Mt. Washington DH 2012. Organizers bill it as the fastest longboard race in North America and second fastest in the world.
"This year is the third official year of racing although we've been gathering annually for about six years now," said event spokesperson Erik Ware. "If it's dry out, I expect (racers) to be exceeding 100 km/h; in the wet, maybe 90."
Ware said fans and non-fans alike can expect heated competition as some of the fastest racers in Canada and the States – "And and I think some people from Puerto Rico" – will be here.
"We are expecting around 50 racers. There is a men's, women's and an under 16 class. The race is free to spectate. We welcome any and all types of people. There is parking at the chain-up area for spectators. Spectators will not be permitted to park anywhere along the race course other than the chain-up area. The finish line will be right at the chain-up area.
"The race starts at 10 a.m. rain or shine. People heading up Mount Washington on Saturday should note there will be short road closures in effect from 10 a.m until the race is finished (approximately 5 p.m)," Ware said.
