Good turnout for men's darts tourney

Singles and doubles events hosted by Comox Legion Br. 160

Twenty-eight players turned out for the Comox Legion’s Men’s Open Darts Tournament on the weekend.

The North Island was well represented, with players from Duncan, Nanaimo and Campbell River and even overseas with five from Quadra Island and one from Cortes Island joining the locals for a day of competitive darts.

Starting the day with the doubles event, 14 pairs faced off at 10 a.m., playing a one-game round robin format, with the top eight advancing to the knockout stage.

Playing the best-of-three, the eventual winners were locals Bill Durant and Shane Dennis; second place went to Albert Wilson (Quadra Island) and Ross Doak (Quadra Island). Doug Meldrum and Willie Stewart (Duncan) beat out Ken Binnersley and Ken McGuffie (Quadra Island) for third spot. Payout went to first through fourth.

The singles event started after a short lunch break. Two sheets of 12 participants played the one-game round robin event with the top eight from each sheet moving into the best-of-three knockout rounds.

Another well-contested event had Ken Binnersley winning over Willie Stewart with Laurie (Laramie) Bull edging out Doug Meldrum for third spot.

"Thanks go to Vicky Willington for preparing the chili and to Leslie Lamouroux for dishing up the lunch and for running the raffles," an event spokesperson said. "Last but not least, thanks to Don Parsons for setting up the hall and boards, and to the players who assisted in taking the boards down on completion."

Next up is the Comox Legion's sixth annual Memorial Tournament on April 21.
