The Comox Valley Jets reached the final of the 13U AA provincials, hosted by the Comox Valley Baseball Association on the BC Day weekend at Aspen Park in Comox.
The boys kicked off the tourney Thursday with a 2-1 win over Tri-City. On Friday, they beat the Cloverdale Spurs 7-5, and continued their winning ways Saturday, 15-5 over Salmon Arm and 13-10 over Nanaimo.
In the semi-finals, the host side won a seesaw battle over Ladysmith.
“We were down going into the bottom of the seventh 5-4,” Jets coach Steve McNamee said.
Ladysmith intentionally walked the Jets’ home run hitter. The following batter belted a walk-off home run to win the game 6-5.
In Sunday’s championship final, the Jets lost 10-5 to Aldergrove.
“There was one inning where they kind of Texas Leaguered us to death,” McNamee said. “They hit three or four bloop singles that landed in that Bermuda Triangle between short stop, third base, and the left fielder and right fielder, and then a guy came up and hit a three-run home run.
“It was a fantastic game,” he added. “Our kids played defensively sound…We didn’t lose that game, we got beat by a team that’s very, very good. For the first time all season, we had guys making great plays, but making the routine plays, too. We didn’t make any mistakes defensively.”
