The Comox Valley Aquatic Club had a successful season with a record number of swimmers qualifying at regional, provincial and national levels.

The Sharks season ended with an exciting July. It started in Kelowna at the Tier 1 Provincial Championships with nine swimmers, aged 10 to 13, with 21 top 16 finishes. Then another group of nine swimmers, 13 to 18 years, travelled to Victoria for Tier 2 Provincial Championships. Ian Goodyear (18) came home with top three finishes in all his swims in his para-swimmer class.

Mid-July had Graham Tattrie (14) and Jordan Raume (13) being selected for the BC Summer Games Vancouver Island zone team. Graham helped the relay team bring home a gold medal.

On the same weekend, Iris Tinmouth (14) and Goodyear attended the Canadian Senior National Swim Trials in Edmonton. This was the qualifying meet for swimmers representing Canada in the Pan Pacific Swim Championships in Tokyo next week. Both did a great job with Ian’s performances highlighted with a fourth-place finish in the 400m freestyle in the para-swimming category.

Finally, July finished off with two swim meets in Surrey with 11 swimmers. Iris travelled to Winnipeg for the Canadian Junior Championships where she competed with more than 700 of Canada’s top 18 and under swimmers. She had a fifth-place finish in the 1500m free, ninth place in 400m IM, 10th in 800m free, and 15th in the 200m fly overall, and finished second in all these swims among B.C. swimmers. She was one of the few swimmers in the meet to make finals and score points in each event she entered.

Now that the Sharks are resting and enjoying the summer months, they also prepare for another season in September. The Comox Valley Aquatic Club is inviting swimmers who are born in 2012 or older to join them on Wednesday, Sept. 5 or Thursday, Sept. 6 from 4–6 p.m. at the Comox Valley Sports Centre for a swim assessment and new swimmer registration for the 2018-2019 swim season.
