The third annual Cumberland Open Table Tennis Tournament goes Saturday, Feb. 27 upstairs at the Cumberland Cultural Centre. The action begins at 10 a.m.

Players of all ages and abilities are welcome to compete in both singles and doubles. Players will be separated into competitive and recreational categories after the initial round robin. There will be separate categories for juniors and women if there are sufficient entries.

Entry fee is $15 for one event, $20 for singles and doubles, and $5 for juniors. For more info or to register, contact Adam Kuzma at 250-203-7253 or adamkuzma39@gmail.com. Online registration is available at VITTA.ca

"Online registrations have been coming in quite well from Nanaimo, Victoria, Denman Island as well as locally and we expect a good turnout of players," said Ed Schum.

"While we will have some of the best players from Vancouver Island attending, this is a tournament for players of all abilities. Everyone will get lots of games and the main focus will be on fun for everyone," Schum added.

"It is very encouraging to see that entries of youth, (ages eight to 12) will be about double of last year. This is probably a result of our Junior program we are doing every Monday 4-5 p.m. in the Cumberland Cultural Centre," said Schum, adding that more players of ages and abilities, male and female, are always welcome to join the Cumberland Table Tennis Club.

The youth program, available to all from the Valley, is free and put on by the Cumberland Community School Society and the Cumberland Recreation Institute (CRI).

"This year's Cumberland table tennis championships include over 12 youths participating directly from our youth program," said Kuzma.

"This is the only youth table tennis development program on the Island. It has been running for three years now and is gaining in popularity," Kuzma added.
