Thyssen de Goede of Courtenay is one of seven Island rugby players named to Team Canada to compete in the 2011 Hong Kong Sevens from March 25-27.

De Goede, a stalwart with the G.P. Vanier Towhees and veteran of international competition, currently plays for James Bay Athletic Association. He played with the national sevens at events in Wellington and Las Vegas.

Canada opens the 2011 Hong Kong Sevens against two traditional rugby powers – Argentina and Australia – before concluding pool play against Zimbabwe.

Canada recorded a breakthrough last year in Hong Kong by winning the Bowl, which goes to the champion of the consolation round. That, however, was followed by a disappointing performance in the 2010 Commonwealth Games at Delhi.

The Hong Kong Sevens is considered the world championship for the sport. The tournament sold out months ago.
