With just six games to go, the Comox Valley Glacier Kings are ready to put an exclamation point on a stellar Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League regular season.
The only question mark is the goaltending situation, where starter Cameron Waddington is recovering from a concussion suffered last weekend. James Davison, who has four wins in five games, will start this weekend and Comox Valley Midget B affiliate player Kyle McAllister will back him up.
The Yetis are in Campbell River tonight to take on the Storm then host the Saanich Braves on Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. start at Comox Valley Sports Centre Arena No. 1.
Coach Jim MacLean notes the team is in first place overall, three points up on the Victoria Cougars, who have three games in hand. Should the Icemen win out, they would receive a first-round bye in the playoffs. The next-best scenario would see the Glacier Kings finish second and meet the Storm in the first round.
The Yetis and Cougars have one regular season game left (Feb. 5 in Courtenay) while three of their remaining games are with Saanich.
“We’ve won all three games against them so far, but they’ve all been by one goal, including two shootouts, so they won’t be easy,” MacLean said.
MacLean said the flu bug that bit the team last week has been overcome, and except for Waddington, everyone is healthy heading down the home stretch. The coach noted the team has avoided major injuries this season, unlike last year. They have one player card left but are not actively pursuing any addition to the lineup.
