Courtenay community agency hosting Earth Day Free Clothing Store

Donations being accepted until April 18

Lake Trail Community Education Society (LTCES) is hosting its third Annual Earth Day Free Clothing Store on Monday, April 22.

This pop-up event, located at Lake Trail Community School, will provide free clothing and offer clothing repair services to the public.

To stock the store, LTCES is holding a clothing drive until April 18. The community is invited to donate clean, gently used clothing and accessories on school days, between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., or 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. A great opportunity to spring clean your closet.

The Free Clothing Store will be open to the public on April 22 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Visitors can also get their clothing repaired onsite at no cost, allowing them to extend the lifespan of their garments.

“According to recent statistics, Canadians throw away over 12 million tonnes of textile waste every year, and only about 15 per cent of that waste gets recycled or reused,” said Tina Willard-Stepan, Comox Strathcona Waste Management educator. “By offering free clothing and repair services, this annual Earth Day event hopes to reduce textile waste and promote sustainable fashion practices.”

“The Free Clothing Store is also a really wonderful opportunity to share and build resilience as a community at a time when many things are feeling challenging and less affordable,” adds LTCES executive director, Anna Rambow.

The event is hosted by Lake Trail Community School and LTCES, supported by Comox Strathcona Waste Management educators, and involves Lake Trail Leadership students in planning and implementation.
