What do movie sequels, Babe, The Mighty Ducks or Looney Tunes and Road Runner cartoons have in common?

They all feature soundtracks from famous classical pieces such as Verdi’s Anvil Chorus, Offenbach’s Galop, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, or Rossini’s William Tell Overture.

The Strathcona Symphony Orchestra (SSO) members will present Family Fun in March to audiences young at heart. Little ones and their families might get a chance to conduct the musicians or play an instrument (percussion anyone?) in a rousing selection of musical favourites as well as enjoy some fun musical antics.

SSO music director, Helena Jung, wants to inspire and entertain audiences with the gift of music drawn from cartoons to television shows and Hollywood movie blockbusters.

“Even if our concertgoers are not familiar with some of the composers, they will be delighted at recognizing selections from famous operas, cartoon classics, animated films, such as Disney’s Beauty and the Beast or Aladdin, or the theme song from television’s Games of Thrones,” said Jung. “This immersive musical experience will capture the familiarity and nostalgia of famous cartoons and other animated films, giving listeners of all ages the joy of recognizing their favourite childhood themes.

“From Bugs Bunny’s playful antics to Aladdin’s magic carpet ride, these memorable pieces will ignite the imagination of our audiences and hopefully win some hearts over to the joy of classical music.”

Tickets for the SSO’s Family Fun can be purchased at https://strathcona-symphony-orchestra.tickit.ca/ or at the door, if available. Tickets for this special performance have been reduced in price to $10 for children, aged 12 years and under. Adult tickets are $25.

Performances are on Saturday, March 9 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 10 at 2 p.m. The concerts will be at the Florence Filberg Centre, 411 Anderton Ave., Courtenay.
