Parking will be free at all North Island College campuses beginning Oct. 1, 2017.

NIC’s board of governors decided to discontinue paid parking at the Comox Valley campus during its regularly scheduled board meeting Sept. 28.

“Given the change in context, the board decided discontinuing paid parking was the right thing to do,” said Randall Heidt, NIC’s vice-president, strategic initiatives.

NIC was forced to revisit its parking policy after Island Health reversed its decision regarding pay parking at the North Island Hospitals in Courtenay and Campbell River.

The hospitals were originally planning to charge for parking at both locations.

NIC incorporated pay parking in September of 2016, to protect its own parking spaces from hospital visitors and staff who would be opposed to paying at the hospital parking areas.

Island Health announced a reversal in its decision on Sept. 1, 2017.

The College will refund individuals who have pre-paid for parking past October 1, 2017.
