November 12, 1935 – June 19, 2017

Maybe it’s a cliché to say someone was a real character but, in Don Sinnema you found one. His gruff exterior belied a wry sense of humour and soft heart that grew larger and softer through the years. He was a wonderful husband, step-father, grandfather and a good friend to many. He was a military man and he was proud of it. The friendships he developed there were strong and lifelong. After he retired from the service he remained a strong supporter of the Legion serving as Poppy Chairman and organizing the yearly Remembrance Day ceremonies at the Comox Cenotaph. At home, he liked little more than working in his garden. Only his wife “Tootie” was more beloved. Friends from early childhood, they found each other again in later life and built a colorful loving family. They loved their animals and their lives were enriched by them. For years he hiked daily about Comox with his or any other neighbourhood dog that needed walking.

Don passed away after a lengthy battle with heart disease and COPD. He leaves to mourn his wife Barbara, step-daughters Pat (Mike), Carol (Mike), step-son Glen (Florita), grandchildren, Jennifer (Mitch), Scott (Shayna), Emily, Arturo, Mitzi, Rochelle and great-grandchildren Noah, Lauren, George and Charlie. He will be missed by his brother Laurie (Shirley) and numerous family members and friends across Canada.

Thank you to Dr. Gee, Dr. Thomas and the doctors and nursing staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital who cared for him while in emergency and on the 3rd floor.

Those of us who knew Don Sinnema will smile at the mention of his name and miss, but never forget, his company.

There will be no service at Don’s request. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your favourite charity.
